Based on Paula Vogel's Bake-Offs, the Quarantine Bake-Off is a real time artistic response to the social isolation caused by the COVID 19 outbreak. It's a community of people eager to write and keep art alive in a time of intense darkness. The rules are we send/post 5 ingredients that need to be included in a short play (15 pages max). You then have 48 hours to write a play that includes all of those ingredients and submit to our panel of readers. Our panel includes professional theater-makers from all over the country who are eager to read this work. We then will choose a few of those plays to be featured in a virtual online reading.

On March 13th four students from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Acting program and the NYU Playwrights Horizons program posted an online flyer for a virtual playwriting challenge on social media only expect at most 100 participants. By the end of the weekend, we had over 5000 people interested in participating in our playwriting challenge.
Then, we sent out the ingredients:
- An empty store/stadium/theatre
- A bottle of hand sanitizer
- A virtual dance or duet
- A moment of mass panic
- A light in the dark
Extra Credit: flower or flour
And after 32 hours of writing, we had about 2300 plays to read. We had participants from all over the states, to the UK, to Japan, to Ecuador, to Indonesia, to the Czech Republic, to Japan, to Australia, to Romania, to Canada, to Mexico (the list goes on!), from toddlers to a 95-year-old, professional playwrights and theater-makers to people who have never seen a live play, teacher to students, novelists to poets, people who haven't done theater since high school to actors currently starring on Broadway, kids whose school musical has been canceled and adults who find themselves out of work for the foreseeable future.
We then had our first live virtual reading on YoutubeLive on Wednesday March 25th featuring actors from the UMN/Guthrie BFA program and NYU Tisch. Check out that recording on our Youtube channel, along with the recording of our second live reading as well!
Following the success of our first bake off, we followed up with a second bake off, where the ingredients were:
1. A Second Chance
2. Wild Turkey
4. A Reuniting
5. A Sprig of Mint
6. Extra Credit: A monologue spoken while eating a fried egg.
Be sure to check out those plays on this website!
In the future, we plan to continue bringing accessible writing and theatrical opportunities to our community all over the world. Over the summer, we plan on giving opportunities to college actors through our Collegiate Quarantine Reading series, where we partner with students from different schools to give students opportunities to stay artistically active while not in school. Be on the look out for more opportunities from the BakeOff!
